Most men have never read the fabric label on their underwear. You buy a pack, they feel fine in the store, and within six months they're grey, pilled and slightly misshapen — but familiar enough that you keep wearing them anyway.
The fabric is doing more work than you realise. And most of the time, it's losing.
At Ballbra, fabric isn't an afterthought. It's the starting point. That's why we developed ModalFlex™ — our proprietary 88% modal / 12% spandex blend — built specifically for the demands of all-day male comfort.
What is modal?
Modal is a semi-synthetic fibre made from the pulp of beech trees. It belongs to the rayon family, but it's a significant step up — softer, more breathable and more durable than standard viscose rayon.
Beech trees are a renewable resource. They grow in conditions where other crops struggle and require far less water than cotton farming — making modal a more resource-efficient starting point than the fabric in most conventional underwear.
The result is a fibre that feels naturally soft against skin, moves with the body rather than against it, and holds its shape far longer than cotton alternatives.
Modal vs cotton — what actually changes
Cotton gets a free pass because it's familiar. But familiarity isn't the same as performance.
Softness. Modal has a distinctly silky feel — closer to a high-thread-count cotton than standard underwear fabric, without the weight.
Moisture management. Modal pulls moisture away from the skin and releases it into the air faster than cotton. For underwear — worn closest to the body, all day — that difference is significant.
Shape retention. Cotton stretches out. Modal holds its structure wash after wash, meaning your underwear looks and fits the same after a hundred washes as it did on day one.
Pilling resistance. Cotton pills. Modal doesn't. That surface texture you feel on the inside of worn-out underwear — modal essentially eliminates it.
Breathability. Modal's porous fibre structure allows air to circulate. Combined with its moisture-wicking capability, it runs cooler against the skin than cotton in almost every condition.
Why we added 12% spandex
Modal alone is soft. Modal with spandex moves.
The 12% spandex in ModalFlex™ gives the fabric four-way stretch — meaning it moves with you in every direction without pulling, restricting or riding up. It recovers instantly. There's no bagging out, no creeping waistband, no fabric working against your body.
For a support pouch to do its job properly, the fabric surrounding it needs to flex and return. ModalFlex™ is engineered to do exactly that.
The environmental angle
Beech trees are a renewable resource. They grow naturally in mixed forests, thrive in conditions where other crops struggle, and require significantly less water than conventional cotton farming.
Modal fibre is derived from that beech pulp — meaning every pair of Ballbra underwear starts with a raw material that's renewable, and ends as a fibre that's biodegradable at end of life. Unlike synthetic fabrics like polyester, ModalFlex™ won't sit in landfill indefinitely.
It's not the loudest sustainability story in fashion. But it's a genuinely better starting point than most underwear fabric on the market.
What ModalFlex™ means for Ballbra
Every Ballbra is made with ModalFlex™. It's not a marketing add-on — it's why the product feels the way it does.
The softness you notice when you first put them on. The breathability through a full day of wear. The way they still look and feel right after repeated washing. That's the fabric doing its job.
We developed ModalFlex™ because we needed a blend that could support the engineering of the Ballbra — the support pouch, the anti-chafe panels, the fit. Standard cotton couldn't do it. ModalFlex™ can.
